A Simple Guide to Skylight/Roof Window Cleaning

Skylights/ roof windows are a stylish and eco-friendly addition to any home or business, providing a flood of natural light and creating a sense of openness and brightness. Just like other roof windows, skylights require regular cleaning from both inside and outside to maintain their clarity. However, unlike other windows, cleaning a skylight/roof window can be daunting due to their height and hard-to-reach location! With the right tools and techniques, you can safely care for your skylight and ensure a sparkling result every time – read on to find out more.

Before you begin, it is important to take some safety precautions:

  • Ensure that you have a stable and secure ladder that reaches the skylight safely. To reach the skylight from the outside, scaffolding might be necessary.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear, including non-slip footwear to prevent accidents.
  • Consider having a second person help you, especially if your skylight is located at a great height or if you are uncomfortable working on a ladder.

You should also make sure you have all the necessary cleaning supplies before you start. This includes a mild dish soap or a gentle glass cleaner, bucket of warm water, non-abrasive sponges or microfibre cloths, a squeegee with a long handle, and lint-free towels or paper towels for ensuring a streak free result.

Inside Cleaning

Cleaning the inside of a skylight/roof window is typically easier and safer than tackling the outside. Here is how to do it:

  • Using a soft-bristled brush or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, remove dust and debris from the inside surface of the skylight. Never use abrasive tools as these could scratch the glass, leaving permanent damage to the surface of your skylight.
  • Mix a solution of warm water and mild dish soap in a bucket. Dip a soft sponge or microfibre cloth into the solution, wring out excess water, and gently wipe the inside surface of the skylight.
  • Ensure there is no soap residue left on the glass.
  • Dry the surface with a lint-free towel to prevent streaking and water spots.

Inspect for any missed spots and repeat the above steps if necessary.

Outside Cleaning

Cleaning the outside of a skylight/roof windows, may require additional safety measures and equipment due to its height and accessibility. If you are uncomfortable using a ladder, or if you need to access a double storey roof or higher, a scaffolding system or roof access hatch with anchor points on the roof and or harness, might be needed to access the outside of the skylight. Consider hiring a professional for tall or hard-to-reach skylights.

  • Use a soft brush or broom to gently sweep away dirt, dust, and debris that may have accumulated on the skylight’s exterior surface.
  • Using warm water and mild detergent or glass cleaner, gently wipe over the skylight with a sponge or soft brush attached to an extension pole.
  • Rinse the skylight thoroughly with clean water to remove any leftover soap residue.
  • Use a squeegee to remove excess water from the glass, starting from the top and working your way down.

Inspect both the inside and outside of your skylight/roof window or roof window for any streaks, spots, or missed areas.

Touch up where needed and then you can admire the clear, pristine view from your freshly cleaned skylight!
